Job Description and Duties

Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position.

This is a Limited Term (LT) position and may be extended up to 24 months, with the possibility of becoming permanent. If becoming permanent, the selected candidate must have eligibility for a permanent appointment at the time of the LT appointment or at the time of the conversion.

The State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Drinking Water has an opening for an Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) in the Northern California Field Operations Branch. The position is located at 1001 I Street, 17th Floor, Sacramento, right in the heart of downtown next to light rail stations and other public transportation.

Candidates must possess essential personal qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, the ability to work cooperatively with others, and the ability to perform the assigned duties of the class.

Salary information – CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States that does meet accreditation standards must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  1. Ability to use scientific expertise, experience and management skills to work with managers and program staff to track progress of the sampling efforts and coordinate with the sampling contractors.
  2. More complex understanding of scientific data management principles and best practices (e.g., proper maintenance of raw datasets, using appropriate tools and best practices to ensure that any data cleaning/formatting/manipulation is well documented).
  3. Knowledge and experience using computer applications (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Teams and Outlook) as well as other data evaluation tools (i.e., Tableau), programs, software and techniques (i.e., GIS).
  4. Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and interact effectively with others.
  5. Ability to think and write clearly, recognize and evaluate problems proactively, be able to take direction from the supervisor and Division Management, and implement effective and appropriate actions.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships; the ability to prioritize and schedule work efficiently is essential. Possess mature judgement, poise, and tact. Excellent attendance and punctuality, strong communication and organization skills, and adaptability in a fast-paced, challenging environment are vital attributes for the successful candidate.
